In a flashback to the night Vittoria and Emilia turned eight years old, Vittoria convinces Emilia to put their cornicello together, even thought they've been told constantly to never do so. They are taught to never take them off and to never let them touch. Both girls are given cornicello, or amulets, to wear for protection. Nonna Maria teaches the twins magical ways of hiding from both humans and "midnight creatures." Nonna Maria only teaches Emilia and Vittoria defensive and protective spells, never offensive ones. Nonna Maria taught the twins everything they know about magic and spells and told them the legends and stories of the witches. By eight years old, Vittoria was already skilled in the kitchen. From childhood, Emilia and Vittoria grow up working in the family restaurant.
Their family owns a family trattoria, or restaurant, called Sea & Vine. The twins are given false memories of a life where they are witches growing up in Palermo, Sicily as daughters of Nicoletta di Carlo and her unnamed father and the granddaughters of Nonna Maria. When Vittoria attempts to rescue her sister, she is given the same fate. The streghe used dark magic to curse Emilia into a human body, given mortality, and has her memories blocked. However, during her ruse, Emilia and Wrath fall in love with each other for real, and on the eve of the night Emilia and Vittoria were meant to make their grand reveal, Emilia told Wrath everything. They would then orchestrate a situation where the brothers would discover they were involved with the same woman and destroy one another's Houses. Agreeing to the plan, Emilia and Vittoria went into the Circles, each pretending to be the same person, with the goal of seducing Wrath and Pride respectively. Lucia's mother, the First Witch, asked Emilia and Vittoria to help her in seeking vengeance against House Pride and against House Wrath for not forcing Pride and Lucia to end their relationship. Sometime after the princes and their Circles appeared, Lucia fell in love with Pride and ended up heartbroken upon realizing she couldn't remain happy with him forever.
Emilia recalls that she and Vittoria had been cold, and greeted humans and souls with cruelty as they entered their domain.
As part of the Feared, they are believed to have been far worse rulers of the underworld than the Wicked who now reign over the Seven Circles. Little is known about Emilia and Vittoria's lives as goddesses.
The twins predate the Seven Circles and the Wicked. Vittoria and her twin sister Emilia were created by the Crone thousands of years ago.
